- Website traffic, journeys, and event funnels do not require merchant Stripe integration.
- A signup pageview, CTA click, account creation, and trial activation are different outcomes.
- Verify a real accepted event before interpreting an empty conversion report.
Choose the nearest meaningful outcome
You can learn from website conversions before connecting payments. Pick an outcome that represents real progress for your product: a confirmed account, a completed application, or a verified installation. Use a CTA click as an interest signal when that is all you can currently measure, and label it accordingly.
A small SaaS might track signup_cta_clicked, account_created, and first_project_created separately. That sequence distinguishes people who express interest from people who enter the product and reach an initial useful action. It also makes a missing activation step visible without pretending that every signup has paid.
The exact event names are examples. Use stable labels that your own application can emit reliably; do not send names, email addresses, raw customer IDs, card details, or arbitrary form values in event names.
Install and verify tracking before defining success
Add the VisitLift tracker once to the registered public website. Publish the change, visit a normal allowed page, and check that an event was accepted. A copied snippet, a successful deployment, or a visible script tag alone does not prove that collection works.
Check the exact registered domain, exclusions, browser blockers, and content security policy if the event is missing. Do not enable persistent attribution merely to make a setup indicator turn green: basic tracking is a separate capability.
After the first event is visible, trigger the action your goal depends on and verify it separately. A pageview on /signup measures a page visit. To measure completed account creation, emit a supported event only when the application has confirmed that account creation succeeded.
Build an interest funnel and a completion funnel
An interest funnel might be homepage → pricing → signup page. It answers whether observed visits progressed through those pages. A completion funnel might end in the account_created event rather than the signup page. It answers a more demanding question.
Choose the same unit and window across the funnel. If you measure within one visit, someone who returns tomorrow may not complete that funnel even if they eventually sign up. Optional consented continuity and signed identity address different cross-visit questions; they do not make every anonymous visit linkable.
Do not compare an aggregate click count with distinct created accounts and assume the quotient is a precise person-level conversion rate. Explain the populations and exclusions beside the result.
Connect source tags to a useful next decision
Tag the external links you publish with a consistent source, medium, and campaign. Keep tags off your internal navigation so a visitor’s original acquisition context is not overwritten by a link on your own site. Never put private data in campaign parameters.
Compare sources alongside the goals and paths that matter. A campaign with many visits but no accepted completion events deserves a different investigation from one that produces accounts but little product activation. Start with observed counts and keep unknown attribution explicit.
If the founder voluntarily tells you where they found the product, record that as self-reported attribution. It can complement technical measurement, but is not the same as a verified campaign-to-account join.
Add payment verification when it answers a new question
Connecting merchant Stripe Checkout is useful when you need to relate observed activity to verified paid Checkout. It requires the documented attribution metadata and signed webhook; installing a website tracker alone does not establish that link.
VisitLift’s merchant revenue report includes positive gross paid Checkout payments in its supported population. Later subscription invoices, refunds, fees, and historical payments are outside that definition. A trial that charges later is not a positive paid Checkout at signup.
This merchant connection is separate from VisitLift’s subscription billing. You can use website traffic, journeys, and page/event funnels without connecting your customer-facing Stripe account. A card is still required to activate a new VisitLift trial, and the selected plan renews after 14 days unless canceled.
Review evidence before adding more instrumentation
After setup, confirm four facts: a real page event was accepted, your chosen goal represents the outcome you intended, an observed journey contains the relevant sequence, and your source tags appear as expected. Keep a short list of gaps rather than inventing certainty around them.
Use the first reports to decide what to improve: audience fit, an unclear page, a broken signup step, or activation after account creation. More event names do not automatically produce a better decision. A small verified measurement plan is a stronger start than a large untested one.
